True Thinking

‘“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are old from days of eternity.” Therefore Israel will be abandoned until the time when she who is in labour gives birth and the rest of his brothers return to join the Israelites. He will stand to shepherd his flock in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God. And they will live securely, for then his greatness will reach to the ends of the earth and he will be their peace.’ Micah 5:2-5

The Fascination of Herod, Matthew 2:1-10

The Truth causes trouble; Herod did not like the idea of another King “....when Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.” There can only be one King of any people.

The Truth reveals hypocrisy; Herod paid lip service to the wise men, he deceived them but not God. The demands of the coming King go out before him, “Make way”.

The Truth requires action; when a King comes to take up his throne a response is required from the people. Will you bow your knee to the King, a sign of submission to his authority?

Jesus’ words, “I am the way the truth and the life no one comes to the Father but by me.” Are His declaration of independence, His bill of rights and the final word on premiership. They are deliberately presidential and authoritarian and every power, principality and kingdom, every company, country and institution has been given notice.

Thought, Word, Action

Some of these posts are born out of the sayings and musings of Adrian Hawkes who led the Rainbow church for many years. He was greatly influenced by George Canty and this snippet captures some of their manner.

Herod “How wonderful a king is born! When you find him let me know. I will also come and worship” Matthew 2:1-10

We think before we speak and act out what we say so that our words are proven true they confirm our thinking. It is incredibly damaging if your actions do not support your words, you are training your mind to lie. If we sing “I will worship the king” then our actions must prove it. If necessary slow the process down, deliberately think about your physical response and plan the action before speaking. You can not fool God only yourself. If I claim to worship the King then I must work out how that worship will manifest itself. Herod’s action proved his heart. Your action will prove yours.

I play a lot of chess, there is a type of game called bullet in which the competitors playing against each other have only a minute to complete all the moves in the game. These type of games are fast furious and often funny.  There is no time to think deeply about the position you have to act without thinking often you will find yourself in a position you do not like. Fortunately bullet chess ends after only two minutes and the consequences are never life changing!

Glory In This,

“..But rather Glory in this that you know me, you know my ways and know my thoughts.” Jeremiah 9:24.

When Jeremiah spoke it was into a heavy scene, the prophet was loaded down with the sins the people around him were involved in and a lot of what he said was heated, pleading God’s sadness. Good King Josiah recently deceased, the people sank into depravity. Yet here is something amazing, something fabulous! In amongst it all Jeremiah has a perspective that is eternal. Looking back over history in both the New and Old Testament we can see the thoughts of God taking shape and working out. We live in a privileged time, we get to look though the prism of the cross as God’s plans to redeem humanity are revealed. In Galatians 6:14, Paul is saying I am gonna glory only in Jesus Christ crucified. The purpose of the crucifixion & it’s revelation of God to us is breath taking. These verses blend together seamlessly Paul and Jeremiah have one spirit. If you take stock and actually begin to delight in your knowledge of God he will reveal more of his thoughts to you. This is amazing, God says we can know him. He wants to be in relationship with us. As you know the ways of God and apply his way to your waking life the trap will always remain of turning to the left or to the right to glory in your strength or wisdom or riches or in any of the ways He may choose to bless you, maybe your life will even begin to mirror the life of Jesus and still & always glory only in Him.
